A normal house

Just like many others. Here, they eat breakfast the same every day. They go about their daily routine the same every day. Groceries arrive at the door. The lawns are mowed. Nothing ever changes. Until it did.

A group house

A home, and a workplace at the same time. Medications administered. Paperwork completed. Staff rotating through shifts, following rules and procedures. Care delivered is in line with and accredited by national standards. Until they discovered something had gone terribly wrong.

The aftermath

When a serious incident occurs within the house, the scrutiny begins. The façade lifts. Everything and everyone are examined. No one is above suspicion. In the eyes of society, they are all guilty. Who did it? Why did it happen? How? Could it happen again? Important questions. But not the most important one.

About the author

J. D. Taylor has spent nearly three decades volunteering, working, and parenting within structured care environments, observing how institutional systems shape the lives of both those they are designed to support and those employed to run them.

His writing focuses on normality, routine, policy, and the quiet mechanisms through which harm can become ordinary, particularly when no one involved believes they are doing harm at all.

The Spastic House is his debut novel. He lives in Australia, near Canberra.
